Preparing to Ultrasound and Breed Your Mares

So you want a baby, huh? Great! We, at MVP would love to help you. The process of breeding a mare and having a foal requires numerous interactions from many different sources.

The first step is making sure you have a mare to breed! A reproductive soundness exam is always beneficial to this process, because sometimes your mare can have some “stuff” going on in her reproductive system that we may need to clear up first to get her in tip top shape to breed. On the other hand, she may be as healthy as a horse, (pun intended) and all ready to go. Your mare may be a maiden (meaning never being bred or foaled previously,) she may be retired and aging and looks like a good brood mare, or she may just be a mare just intended for breeding. In either aspect, we are here to get her prepared.

A reproductive soundness exam will help our veterinarian see exactly what is going on with your mares’ cycle. This exam would indicate whether your mare is in estrus, diestrus or anestrus. This may include hormonal testing and therapies, uterine lavage, uterine biopsies, or uterine culture and sensitivity testing. This exam will prepare us for the steps that you and the MVP staff will need to take to get your mare bred.

Another step that must be taken by the owner, in the very beginning of this process, is to select a stallion and contact the breeding farm or stallion collection station. The station will need to have your contact information and your mares’ information. It is not MVP’s responsibility to find or pick a sire for your foal. Horses are bred for many different characteristics and disciplines, so spend a little time and research if you are unsure of which sire to select.

Upon stallion selection, another decision to make is when to breed your mare. Parturition is approximately 11 months. So, if we are able to get your mare bred in March, expect a February baby.

In our part of this process, we need to see your mare approximately two weeks before we start the breeding procedure. We are then able to detect where she is at in her cycle and evaluate if hormones are needed to short cycle her. At this time, be prepared to give Mobile Veterinary Practice the contact information for the stallion station, the stallion information, and collection dates. With this, we can sync your mares’ ovulation to the collection date. We will either let you know when to order semen or we will order semen. It is very important to have cooperation from all parties involved.

Getting your mare bred with shipped semen can be a challenge. With cooperation from owners, veterinarians, stallion stations and Mother Nature, it can also be very rewarding.   We look foreword to helping you this season.
